Before Reading
Who created the world?
How was the first human created?
How was the Earth that we live in created? Furthermore, how was the universe born? Mankind has always been curious about these questions since long before the recorded history; however, no one has ever definitively satisfied this curiosity. Therefore, in every country people have used their imagination to make up Creation stories or they have added to the stories that have been passed down to them usually by word of mouth. These mysterious and interesting stories from around the world are based on the culture and lifestyle of the people who tell them.
Summary
When many people think about “Creation,” Genesis from the Bible comes to their mind first. As the story goes, God created the first humans, Adam and Eve. The serpent tricked Eve into eating the forbidden fruit that God had asked them not to eat and they were thrown out of the Garden of Eden.
In the book, we introduce four more Creation stories besides Genesis. In the Northern European story, a frost giant, Ymir died and his body became the mountains and the seas. In the African story, Obatala created the Earth using sand and a hen. In the third story, the North American one, the Kingdom of Heaven was too small for animals to live in, so they created land under the heavens where before there had been only water and then they went to this land to live. In the final story from China, a dog named Pangu died and became the sun, the moon, the mountains and the rivers. To further compare how these Creation stories differ from each other, shall we meet the characters in these stories?
