California condors have been around for millions of years, but sharing the planet with human beings has never been easy. Only 22 condors were left in 1983. Thanks to a group of scientists and conservationists, the last remaining condors were caught and bred in captivity, bringing them back from the brink of extinction. There is still controversy over saving the California condors and still much work that needs to be done to help the birds that are reintroduced in the wild.
