Miguel and Jake, both fifth graders, are excited about trying out for the town's All-Star team. Being close friends, they make a pact that, unless they both make the team, they will not accept the offer to join. This is put to the test when Miguel makes the team and Jake does not. Miguel tries to keep his promise, however, the coach says the pact is selfish and not fair to the team that needs him. When Miguel realizes that Jake is going to be asked to be a team assistant, he discovers he can play on the team and keep his word at the same time.
