Psychology around us
You have often ridden an elevator with a mirror on one of the walls, haven’t you?
Why did people start hanging mirrors on elevator walls? Well, elevators in the early days were way too slow, so users had a lot of complaints. Elevator manufacturers tried to resolve their complaints, but it was hard to produce faster elevators with the technology at that time. This problem, however, was resolved easily thanks to a great idea.
The idea was attaching a mirror to one of the walls! People were lost in thought while looking at their own reflections in the mirror and didn’t care much about the elevator running at such a slow speed. It is a case that solved a problem by applying a simple psychological law that states that people think time passes faster when they are engrossed in something related to their real life. Psychology, a field of study that studies human behavior, helps our lives greatly when its ideas are applied successfully to our real lives as happened in this case.
